Michelle Obama recently made comments (linked just below) that I find
sad and condescending if not offensive. She bemoans having to adhere to white
beauty standards (WBS), and scolds us as to why we're not worthy to have her run
for President. The chip on this woman's shoulder just keeps getting bigger.
Valuetainment Podcast Michelle's interview with comments from white guys (the first 7:30) "What more
do you want from this country?" (at 6:16)
Amala Ekpunobi Podcast Michelle's interview with comments from a black woman (12:30) "You don't have to
[straighten your hair]. That is a choice that you make." (at 1:23)
Michelle has had it so tough in life: a graduate of Princeton University
and Harvard Law School, an enviable career, married with two children, suffered through being
First Lady not once but twice, has a reported net worth of $70 million (her speaking fees
range from $250K to $400K) and has lived in homes most of us could only dream about,
including the White House. Having the best of everything in life has not prevented Michelle
from finding racism and oppression under every rock.
Just after her huaband was inaugurated in 2008, she declared that for the
first time in her adult life she was "really proud" of her country. You can listen for yourself in this
18-second YouTube video.
So, that's what it took to finally impress her about America at 44 years old?
At least we can say she has very high standards.
As for WBS, this white guy couldn't care less if her hair is straight,
kinky, braided, beaded, in a bun, ponytail, a wig, or shaved off. Her apparent
obsession over WBS seems more than a little excessive. I know a therapist that
might be able to help her. I'll get started with a piece of my mind: Stop biting
your nails over WBS and spend more time counting your many blessings.
Having To Endure Unwanted Media Attention
Poor Thing, How Did She Survive?
I point out that presenting with straight hair on the cover of Ebony
was her choice, not adherence to WBS.
